Bush Condemns Nigerian Mother’s Execution as Barbaric

10/16/02 - President George W Bush spoke out today in outrage at the barbaric execution awaiting Nigerian mother Safiya Huseini.

A fundamentalist Islamic court has condemned Huseini to death for adultery, which it considers a capital crime. The Sharia law system went into effect after Huseini’s child was conceived and born, but claims the ruling is retroactive.

Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, attorney general of the accused woman’s home state of Sokoto, explains that the convict is trapped in a deep pit or lashed to a tree or pillar to prevent escape, and then stoned to death.

International outcry against Huseini’s fate led by Amnesty International and international women’s groups brought the situation to President Bush’s attention.

Bush decried the execution as inhumane and barbaric.

He has invited Huseini to move to his home state of Texas, where she can be executed in a more civilized and modern way: by electrocution or lethal injection.

Huseini could not be reached for comment.

In related news, the Reverend Jerry Falwell has extended an offer of guest professorships at the newly established Law School of Liberty University to the members of the Sharia court that condemned Huseini.
